Michael Powell's boyhood in Canterbury spanned the last years of the Edwardian era and the First World War. The medieval city he grew up in had barely changed for many centuries, despite having been knocked about a bit during the Reformation and the English Civil War.

This book draws on his memories of his life in Canterbury and contains over 300 photographs. These include snapshots from the Powell family album, scenes from Edwardian life, and archive and recent pictures of places that were familiar to young Michael when he explored Canterbury, nearby villages and resorts.

These experiences, the everyday sights and sounds of those days - and the arrival in the Canterbury countryside of soldiers destined to be sent overseas to fight in a world war - inspired Michael many years later, when he sought a background for his classic wartime movie A Canterbury Tale.
