Around each screening will be other activities themed to reflect the film itself, for example, the Brief Encounter experience could include a trip on the Mid Hants Railway, afternoon tea and a talk by members of the society that has helped to preserve the famous Cairnforth Station which was used as a location for the film. Younger visitors will be able to enjoy cartoons of the period as well as interpretation sessions and interactive talks by veterans." Sounds great - I'm going to start planning for it now!

I now have permission to put on a production of A Matter of Life and Death and the Nunthorpe Players have agreed to do it, scheduled for 11th to 15th June at St. Mary's Church Hall, Nunthorpe, Nr Middlesbrough.

Our production will be sticking very much to the original, as far as it is possible to do so on a 24' wide stage (bar skittles replaces the table tennis, due to space limitations). There will be no nurses on flying bedsteads or acrobat (Conductor 71) flying out over the audience, as I understand happened in the 2007 production by Knee High Theatre Company. June will remain very much a Boston girl.

If you look closely, you will see that this poster announces the coming attraction: A Matter of Life and Death on May 16. I will have the privilege of talking for a few minutes after the film is over. This hospital in Montreal was established in 1934 to address exactly the kinds of problems Peter Carter experienced.

It would have been perfectly appropriate for a 1941 book by neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield (Epilepsy and cerebral localization) to be open on Dr. Reeve's desk. I've always had a hunch that Powell and Pressburger read it.

Wish you all could be there!

Anton Walbrook/Adolf Wohlbrück Star and Enigma
Old Library Foyer, Exeter
6th March - 30th June 2013 from 10 am to 5.30 pm

Exhibition celebrating actor Anton Walbrook, mixing artefacts with original artwork

This exhibition celebrates the life and work of Anton Walbrook, one of cinema's most enigmatic stars.

Famous in Germany as Adolf Wohlbrück , he escaped the Nazis and became a star in Britain as Anton Walbrook, appearing in films such as 'Dangerous Moonlight', 'Gaslight', Powell and Pressburger's 'The Red Shoes' and 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp', and as Prince Albert in 'Sixty Glorious Years'.

Secretly Jewish in Germany and also gay, he cultivated an air of mystery and elegance that appealed to film fans. This exhibition combines artefacts from The Bill Douglas Centre Museum and the personal collection of volunteer James Downs (currently writing a biography of Walbrook), with original artworks inspired by the star by Irish artist Matt McLaren. Matt employs an innovative technique - creating illustrations, cutting them out to create models and then photographing them to create a three dimensional effect.

Free entry.
