IKWIG Phone Box
How it used to look (Photo by Ian Court in 2009) The phone box used in IKWIG is in very poor repair. The door is off its hinges and you can't make a call from it. The IKWIG phone box has been listed by Historic Scotland as a Category B building (or structure) of local importance. This should mean it will be preserved for future visits, even though it may be impractical and it will prevent it from being "upgraded" to a more modern style.
Prof Robert Beveridge, the chap that organised our anniversary trips to Mull, is starting a campaign to get it back up to standard.
It's the phone box by the waterfall at Carsaig that Roger Livesey (as Torquil) made the call to book rooms at the Western Isles hotel for himself & Wendy Hiller (as Joan) - all filmed in the studio with shots made at the real phone kiosk to make it look like Roger was on Mull.
But although BT (British Telecom) have been told about its poor state of repair, they are reluctant to do anything about it.
Persistence pays off :)
BT now say that they've found some doors and are getting them shipped out to Mull ASAP hopefully along with the paint to do up the old box correctly. Then we will just need to get the phone working as a phone so that we can call out from it, and in to it.
Well done Robert & all the other IKWIGers
