I Know Where I'm Going!
A Celebration of This Well Loved Mull Film
The 2020 (or 2021 or maybe even 2022) weekend
Friday evening was spent in front of a hot computer watching a recorded message from Petula Clark. Then Professors Robert Beveridge and Ian Christy, with technical help from Ian Court, held live Zoom calls with first Petula, and then with Thelma Schoonmaker Powell and Andrew Macdonald, one of Emeric’s grandsons. And we had a very well-received talk from Prof Ian, too.
I’ve posted a couple of albums of photos that I took on the recent IKWIG Gathering in Tobermory on my Flickr pages. The first is of the whirlwind tour that was Saturday with an 08:00 start from the Western Isles Hotel in Tobermory to the first stop at Carsaig (Erraig) where the cables at “the” phone box were found to be almost severed. A brief visit to Carsaig House, and then on to Carsaig Pier which is showing even more signs of erosion. Next was Loch Buie and Lochbuie House to meet Jim Corbett and get a tour of Moy Castle. And then over to Duart Castle (Castle of Sorne) for a quick tour and then a screening of the film, with many thanks to the fellows from BBC Alba Stornoway who’d travelled from Orkney to set up the projection and sound equipment. The buffet was served by Sir Lachlan Maclean and two generations of his sons. Finally back to WIH in Tobermory for the evening meal and a quiz (we won! and the prize was a framed photo of Dame Wendy Hiller, with a signature - it’s to be the quiz prize from now on). Thanks to Steve for the fiendish questions and the picture round.
The day was hectic and it was a round trip of about 110 miles.
The second album is of “then and now” comparisons. I didn’t get many done as I ran out of time - for 2025, which has been pencilled in for the next gathering (80th anniversary), I think that I’ll be staying closer to the “action” as the major locations are at Carsaig and Loch Buie/Moy Castle, with brief exteriors at Torosay (Achnacroish) and Duart Castle (Castle of Sorne).
Many thanks are due to Prof Robert, Ian Court and Nicolas Maclean for making the event another success. Thanks also to Jim Corbett and Sir Lachlan Maclean and his family for allowing us to visit their homes.
