The Queen's Guards (1960)
"Radio Times" film guide
Director - Michael Powell
Starring - Daniel Massey, Raymond Massey
Running Time - 110 mins
Country of Origin - UK
Screenplay - Roger Milner, from his story, from an idea by Simon Harcourt-Smith"The most inept piece of film-making that I have ever produced or directed", said Michael Powell of this wearisome slice of pomp and circumstance. It's a family drama, with a touch of The Four Feathers, about two brothers, one of whom dies at Tobruk leaving the other to maintain the family tradition by joining the Guards and fighting for the Empire in some fly-blown Arab state. Raymond Massey plays the father, Daniel Massey the son and it's all jolly well British, a sort of belated reaction to the humiliation of Suez.
