Tales Of Hoffmann
Issue 72 June 1995
Starring: Moira Shearer, Leonide Massine, Robert Helpmann, Robert Rounseville, Ann Ayars Director: Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger Details: Cert U (Warner) A clever fusion of movie and operatic ballet, this is a wondrous, if rather inaccessible, fairy tale. Unaware of rival Lindorff's (Helpmann) machinations, poet Hoffmann (Rounseville), smitten with ballerina Stella (Shearer), relates tales of three prior loves - automaton doll Olympia (Shearer, again), Venetian courtesan Guiletta (Tcherina) and consumptive singer Antonia (Ayars), and of their thwarting by villainous necromantics or inventors (Helpmann, again). The famous directing duo's sumptuous design throughout is punctuated by captivating ballet and moments of sheer magic.
