The Spy in Black (1939)
"Radio Times" film guide
Director - Michael Powell
Screenplay - Emeric Pressburger, Roland Pertwee
Starring - Conrad Veidt & Valerie Hobson
Running Time - 78 mins
Country of Origin - UKA bold and atmospheric espionage thriller-cum-melodrama-cum-romance, made on the eve of the Second World War, but set during the First World War, with Conrad Veidt turning in a convincing performance as a German submarine commander dispatched to the Orkney Islands on a mission to sink the British fleet. Strong writing combines with striking cinematography and talented direction to make this a satisfying entertainment, the first collaboration of celebrated film-makers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
