The Love Test (1935)
"Radio Times" film guide
Director - Michael Powell
Starring - Judy Gunn & Louis Hayward
Running Time - 63 mins
Country of Origin - UKThis early romantic comedy from director Michael Powell features one of Bernard Miles's first appearances, as well as an early outing for Googie Withers, whom Powell claimed "brings sunshine into dull lives, makes bald hair grow". Judy Gunn stars as a laboratory overseer up against her male employees. Initially successful, Gunn has to work to outwit her adversaries, who plot to oust her by making her fall in love. Only rediscovered in the late eighties, The Love Test demonstrates Powell's fascination with strong women, while the glamorisation of Gunn is a definite forerunner to Sister Ruth's transformation in Black Narcissus.
