The Powell & Pressburger Pages

Dedicated to the work of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and all the other people, both actors and technicians who helped them make those wonderful films.

A lot of the documents have been sent to me or have come from other web sites. The name of the web site is given where known. If I have unintentionally included an image or document that is copyrighted or that I shouldn't have done then please email me and I'll remove it.

I make no money from this site, it's purely for the love of the films.

Staying on Mull

Neil Murray writes:
Whilst hunting for B&B accommodation in the west of Scotland, I came across 3 properties in Carsaig on Mull, where the jetty, phone box and other scenes (Joan going down the hill to Carsaig House) were filmed in IKWIG. Perhaps other P&P devotees would be interested? I know the weather can be a gamble, though when I was not far away about a week ago, it was incredibly sunny and hot.

I also noticed cruises to the whirlpool of Corryvreckan from the ports of Crinan and Easdale (near Oban)

The Carsaig Estate is on the southern side of The Ross of Mull about 24 miles west of the car-ferry at Craignure and 20 miles east of Fionnphort where the boats depart for Iona, the Treshnish Isles and Staffa.

Hidden away 4 miles down a single-track road from Mull's A849, and bordering the waters' edge, the Estate faces south over Carsaig Bay to the distant Isles of Jura, Colonsay and Islay, and offers visitors two adjoining cottages in a truly spectacular setting where only the deer, and the birds in the forests behind, will disturb the peace. There is a small burn running down at the side and front of the cottages through about 250 yards of grassy, rocky foreshore to reach a beautiful long sandy beach facing across to mainland Scotland, and any visitors who are true countrylovers will be heartsick to leave such a naturally idyllic spot for the smog and bustle of busier places.

The cottages are not entirely isolated as the owner's 'Carsaig House' (far enough away not to overlook), and the cottage of the helpful caretakers (who are a mine of information on the area) are within the Estate, and just outside there is a School of Painting whose members come from all over the world to capture the stunning scenery. The nearest shop and restaurant are six miles away.

East and West Carsaig

See Trivago site.

The two cottages stand on their own, semi-detached from each other and identical, and can he booked either separately or jointly. Simple but comfortably furnished, they offer an ideal holiday for families with children who will enjoy the clear air and freedom, the beautiful beach, and the lots of activities this fascinating island offers.

Heating is by open-fire, night store and fan heaters. Electricity and bed-linen are INCLUDED in the rent and towels can be hired. We regret pets are not accepted. There is no TV in either cottage as reception is extremely poor.

There are more cottages on Mull. There are also a few hotels and guest houses such as The Western Isles Hotel in Tobermory (used in the film). See gazeteer listing for this and other Hotels and guest houses on Mull.

Colonsay

If you want to visit Colonsay (the island of "Kiloran") then you should see the web site for the Colonsay Estate. You can stay in Kiloran Bay Cottage, on Kiloran Bay and visit Pig's Paradise and the other places mentioned.
