BL9/44. "Can you show me how to divide say, 5,163 by 8?" When the Minister comes to visit the room where the backroom scientists work, he is visibly impressed by the electric calculating machine which he had never seen before. The scientists try to conceal their amusement.

BL9/57. "Next time you just decide to go home when we're out together, I'd be obliged if you'd tell me". After Sammy Rice, crippled scientific backroom worker, and his girl friend Susan have quarrelled in the Hickory Tree nightclub over his lack of ambition, she walks out and goes back to their flat.

BL9/2. "You've heard of Chesil Bank? It's a strange place. Everything turns up there: sharks, silver ingots .. and now these things." Colonel Strang and Sammy Rice look down from the hill-top onto Chesil Bank, where the second German booby bomb is lying. Sammy's colleague Captain Stuart has just been blown up while attempting to dismantle the first one.

BL9/14. Sitting in the slit trench on Chesil Beach, Dorset, Sammy Rice stretches out his reaching rod towards the new type of German bomb lying in the shingle.
